In Nyot Ou, Phongsaly, more than a thousand families grow forest tea, bought mostly by traders from Yunnan. Since 2010 the French NGO CCL has supported their organisation into a cooperative, with which it holds a tea festival where, in 2023, young growers screened documentaries about their villages. The cooperative seeks to negotiate collectively against middlemen, but it depends on a few buyers, the state promotes tea with Chinese investors and its autonomy is still a goal of the NGO.
