Meung Tea Producers Cooperative (MTPC)

Meung (Bokeo) · North · Laos

Civic foodCommons and belonging2022 (fábrica, 2017-2018)

A cooperative of Hmong, Khmu, Akha and Lahu smallholders that jointly processes tea from old gardens and forests. It grew out of a land dispute: according to a consultancy involved, if the community factory failed the community forest would go to Chinese investors for bananas, and the villages gained communal use rights. In 2023 it obtained EU organic certification and a contract with Ethiquable. Only its supporters write about it, no one explains how it is governed and there is no news since November 2023.

Led by
Growers from six Meung villages, with the Lao association MHP and the MRLG programme; later the AFD-funded Mekong Tea project, run by the Ministry of Agriculture with Gret, AVSF and LCG
