Komaen Tea Promotion Association
Komaen (Phongsaly) · North · Laos
A growers' association in Komaen, a village of century-old tea trees, that sought and now manages the geographical indication for its tea. Such an indication is a collective right: it ties production to the place, and only those who meet the specification may use the name, about 94 families with 100 hectares in 2024. It is an intangible commons held by the growers. Tensions: it was born within a state and donor programme, and no one explains how it is governed or who controls the specification.
