Mercado de Sam Chuk ตลาดสามชุก
Sam Chuk (Suphan Buri) · Central · Thailand
Third placeParticipatory urbanismCommons and belonginghacia 2003
Some 200 wooden shophouses along the Suphan Buri river, threatened with eviction around 2003. With help from community architects, residents organised food festivals, clean-up days and 22 house museums that are still lived in, and set up a revolving fund from donations and sales to repair houses and streets. The Treasury Department, which owns the land, moved from one-year contracts to a fifteen-year lease. A UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Merit winner in 2009, it is a reference for bottom-up conservation, with tourism as both support and risk.
