Pom Mahakan

Bangkok (Phra Nakhon) · Bangkok · Thailand

Third placeCommons and belonging1992 a 2018

A community of wooden houses behind the wall of Mahakan Fort, in Bangkok's historic centre. It resisted for 26 years, from 1992, the city plan to turn the area into a park, and in the 2000s it even agreed to be kept as a living museum, but the deal failed. The Bangkok administration evicted it in April 2018 on the basis of a 2002 resolution and a 2004 court ruling, and the site is now a park. A case of lived vernacular heritage sacrificed in the name of public space.
