Third placeCommons and belongingArt and territory1900 (mercado)
A 19th-century neighbourhood in central Bangkok, with wooden houses, shophouses, temples, a 1918 cinema and the market opened in 1900, considered the country's first land market. Nearly all residents rent from the Crown Property Bureau, which manages Crown assets, on short contracts. A new metro station brings opportunity and fear of eviction, and residents have turned to heritage and to work with researchers to defend their right to stay. Heritage, community and development pull in different directions.
