Guardianes del dugongo de Ko Libong
Kantang (Trang) · South · Thailand
Volunteer network launched in 2011 in the eight villages of Ko Libong, a Muslim fishing island that was home to the country's largest dugong population. They watch over the seagrass meadows, promote fishing and boating practices that do not harm the animals, monitor with drones and teach citizen science to schoolchildren. Since 2021 the meadows have collapsed and most dugongs have died or left; with IUCN support the network is trialling cages to protect what remains. Its coordinator criticises many meetings and few decisions.
