Participatory urbanismThird place2020

A 1783 canal on the edge of the historic core that the Bangkok administration cleaned up and turned in 2020 into a 1.5 km promenade with a pedestrian street, murals and a weekend night market. It won the UN-Habitat Asian Townscape Award. The makeover replaced a dense enclave of street stalls with a top-down tourist showcase, and the question is what happened to those vendors and whether the promenade holds up when political priorities change. It is useful for discussing regeneration without participation.
