Kad Kong Ta

Lampang · North · Thailand

Third placeCommons and belonging2002 / 2005

Former river port neighbourhood of the teak trade on the Wang river, with Lanna, Chinese, Burmese and colonial-style houses. After years of decline, residents got involved at Songkran 2002, decorating the street with more than 1,500 lanterns, and elected a committee to run the walking street, officially opened in 2005. Today it is one of Lampang's liveliest spots and brings residents income. The tension is the usual one: keeping the neighbourhood's character against tourist commodification.
