Huay Hin Lad Nai ห้วยหินลาดใน
Wiang Pa Pao (Chiang Rai) · North · Thailand
Small Karen village that since 1993 has managed more than 10,000 rai of forest with its own rules, firebreaks, a community map and rotational farming. In 1992 the area became a national park and villagers were told to leave; they stayed after years of mobilisation. A village leader received the UN Forest Hero award in 2013 and the village became the country's first Indigenous way of life protection zone. After the 2024 floods it was blamed for deforestation, until a study showed the landslides happened in the forest it protects.
