Duang Prateep Foundation มูลนิธิดวงประทีป
Bangkok (Khlong Toei) · Bangkok · Thailand
A foundation created in 1978 from the "one baht a day" school that two residents of the Khlong Toei settlement opened for children with no place in public school. Today it provides education, vocational training, health and community organising. It matters because it grew out of the neighbourhood itself and has spent decades supporting Khlong Toei against the plans of the Port Authority, which owns the land. It lost donations when its founder went into politics, a reminder of how fragile it is to depend on one figure.
