Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre (TAEC)
Luang Prabang · North · Laos
An independent ethnographic museum with fair-trade shops that, according to its website, work with more than 600 artisans from 20 ethnic groups. It is free for Lao citizens and takes objects into schools. It holds that minority cultures belong to their peoples: it trains guides, advises museums and backs the Oma against the copying of their designs. Tensions: it relies on tourism and donors, does not explain its governance or how it shares income with artisans, and only one co-curated exhibition is documented, in 2023.
