Plain of Jars Village Site Contracts

Phonsavan (Xiengkhouang) · North · Laos

Commons and belongingArt and territory2018

Day-to-day care of the eleven groups of stone jars, World Heritage since 2019, is delegated by contract to neighbouring villages: each forms a team that cleans, guards and checks visits, and receives part of the ticket income under a governor's decree. It is a rare form of shared custody in Laos. Tensions: the administration trains and supervises the teams, village chiefs sign the contracts and unexploded bombs limit the work. Nothing confirms the contracts continued after 2021.

Led by
Xiengkhouang provincial government and its heritage office, the Department of Heritage and UNESCO, with the villages next to the eleven sites
