Nam Theun 2 Reservoir Fisheries

Commons and belongingCivic food2008-2009
The 16 villages on the shore of the Nam Theun 2 reservoir, many of them resettled for the dam, hold exclusive fishing rights until 2028, with protected zones and village fishing groups that elect a fishers' association. It is a commons created from above as compensation for a large infrastructure project. A 2021 study shows its limits: only 27% of eligible households registered, unregistered boats abound and the 2028 deadline leaves the future up in the air.
