Nam Nern Night Safari
Muang Hiam (Houaphanh) · North · Laos
A 24-hour boat trip on the Nam Nern river, guided by villagers, some of them former hunters. For each tourist, an agreement pays into the villages' fund, with bonuses for wildlife sightings and cuts of up to 100% if there is hunting; villages vote on how to spend it. According to WCS, hunting did not rise in its area, but another study found illegal hunting and fears of elite capture of the fund. The agreements are signed by village chiefs, who are part of local government.
