Khong Fisheries Co-management
Khong (Champasak) · South · Laos
From 1993 to 1998, 63 villages in Si Phan Don approved their own fishing regulations in assembly, with 68 conservation zones in deep pools of the Mekong. Signed by the district, they became "village law", with one principle: a village may only forbid outsiders what it forbids itself. Lao fish conservation zones began here, but the Don Sahong dam closed a channel residents saw as vital for fish and catches fell; there are no data after 2019.
