Houaphanh Village Bamboo Forests (BNDA)

Sop Bao (Houaphanh) · North · Laos

Commons and belongingCivic food2009

Sop Bao district allocated about 4,950 hectares of bamboo forest to 29 villages (2018 figure). In each, a committee manages it under an annual plan approved by the district, and producer groups sell shoots and basketry. This gave rise to BNDA, which Gret presents as Houaphanh's first civil society organisation; the 2024-2027 phase adds 21 villages. Tensions: fees in some villages diverted buyers to others, investors and monocultures press in, and only the implementer and a funder report on it.

The villages with their bamboo committees and, today, the BNDA association; Gret and the agriculture and forestry offices, funded by AFD, Swiss cooperation, Fondation Ensemble and Oxfam
