A state network of centres where children and teenagers learn traditional dance, music and puppetry, drawing and reading. It began in Vientiane in 1994 with the Japanese NGO Action with Lao Children; the children's house SVA opened in 1995 with a Japanese trade union served as a model, and the Ministry of Information and Culture extended it to every province: more than 39 centres, according to ALC, under the provincial departments. They are state-run, teach official culture and depend in part on Japanese aid.
