Santo Stefano di Sessanio

Santo Stefano di Sessanio (L'Aquila) · Abruzzo · Italy

Reuse of vacancy2004

A fortified medieval village in the Gran Sasso that by the end of the 1990s had barely seventy residents. Businessman Daniele Kihlgren bought dozens of ruined houses and in 2004 opened Sextantio, the first albergo diffuso in Abruzzo, restored to strict conservation criteria. The project rescued the hamlet from ruin, but it is a private luxury tourism venture that coexists with a municipality of just over a hundred residents, which the town council itself is now trying to repopulate with financial incentives.
