Franco Basaglia ran Trieste's psychiatric hospital from 1971 and opened its doors to the city, starting the reform that led to the legal closure of asylums in Italy in 1978. The former hospital and its park became an open place where patients and residents could mix freely, a model studied worldwide. Today the Parco di San Giovanni houses social cooperatives, the university, a theatre and municipal services, with historic buildings still under refurbishment.
