Le Murate

Florencia · Toscana · Italy

Reuse of vacancyArt and territoryCommons and belonging2001

This former enclosed convent, later a prison until 1985, has since 2001 been one of Florence's most cited urban regeneration complexes, with 14,500 square metres in the heart of the historic centre returned to the city. It houses the Murate Art District, housing for resident artists, a literary café and shared workspaces, with part of the refurbishment guided by criteria from Renzo Piano's studio. It is an example of how a place of confinement becomes a space for encounter.
