Reuse of vacancyCommons and belonging2014

A 17th-century baroque complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, occupied since 2014 by a citizens' committee demanding cultural and civic use against institutional neglect. The occupation ended in 2019, and in 2021 the building was sold to the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, which is converting it into a cultural hub with works planned until autumn 2026. The case stands as an example of the tension between citizen self-management and private foundation ownership.
