Università Agraria di Viepri

Viepri, Massa Martana (Perugia) · Umbria · Italy

Third placeCommons and belonging1894

An institution of collective ownership of medieval origin, managing two hundred and eighty-two hectares of forest and pasture in a hamlet of Massa Martana, Umbria. It is a comunanza agraria, a legacy of the central European customary law of the common mark, reserved for families historically tied to the village and inherited within them. An 1894 law equated these bodies with local public bodies, and since 1927 no new ones may be created, so survivors like this one are living legal heritage little known outside Italy.
