The Regole d'Ampezzo are an institution of collective ownership of pastures and forests dating back to the thirteenth century, when the valley's first inhabitants organised the common use of the land. Today they manage around 16,000 hectares of forest and almost all of Cortina's pastures, protected from speculation because they cannot be sold or have their use changed. The regolieri, descendants of the original families, administer the estate according to the laudi, customary rules written down since the fourteenth century.
