Mercato di Porta Palazzo

Turin (TO) · Piemonte · Italy

Third placeCivic food1835

Porta Palazzo is the largest open-air market in Europe and has operated in Piazza della Repubblica in Turin since 1835, when a cholera epidemic forced street vending to be concentrated in a single spot. Every day it brings together food stalls, clothing and second-hand goods, with a strong presence of migrant communities. The Gate project (since 2002) and the RePoPP initiative against food waste (since 2016) try to turn that social density into real integration, not just picturesque tourist appeal.
