A street market in the working-class Albergheria district, with origins attributed to the Arab period of Sicily, between the ninth and tenth centuries. It remains Palermo's liveliest food market, with fish, fruit, vegetable and street food stalls, and keeps the sounds and sights of the North African souks that give it its name. It coexists with processes of tourist gentrification and with the arrival of new migrant residents who have renewed many of its stalls.
