The Mercato Albinelli replaced centuries of open-air selling in Piazza Grande in Modena in 1931 and is today the city's oldest covered market, with around 30,000 visits a week. It combines fruit, cheese and meat stalls with eating places, and has been recognised as a monument of national interest since 1990. Its central fountain, the Portatrice di frutta by Giuseppe Graziosi, is the symbol of the market.
