National Machinami Seminar

Annual gathering, since 1978, of the neighbourhood associations that defend Japan's historic townscapes, under the motto 'machinami belongs to everyone'. A different town hosts it each year, with visits, workshops and a closing declaration; the 48th edition (2025) took place in Taipei with 300 participants from ten countries. It is where heritage conservation is debated from the neighbourhood rather than from government. Tension: ageing associations and touristification of protected districts.
