Stadmakerscongres (City Makers Congress)

Rotterdam, Netherlands

Participatory urbanism and placemakingCivic design and citizen labsConferenceLocal

Annual congress of Rotterdam's city makers (residents, collectives and professionals who shape the city from below), organised every November by the Architectuur Instituut Rotterdam (AIR). For one day a whole theatre becomes a workshop, with themed tables, panels, neighbourhood tours and the Van der Leeuw prize for a citizen initiative. Over a thousand people attend. Tension: it is very Rotterdam-centred and backed by the city council and a public fund, with a bank among its partners, which limits its critical distance from local urban policy.
