Setouchi Triennale

Takamatsu, Japan

Art and territoryRural life and depopulationArt festival or triennialInternational

Contemporary art triennial spread across islands of the Seto Inland Sea (Naoshima, Teshima, Shodoshima, Ogijima and others) and the ports of Takamatsu and Uno. It was set up to counter island depopulation through art, tourism and resident participation, and it is the global reference for the territorial festival model. Relevant for anyone studying art and rural regeneration. Tensions: reliance on mass tourism, the weight of private foundations on Naoshima and fatigue among host communities.
