Nakanojo Biennale

Nakanojo, Japan

Art and territoryRural life and depopulationArt festival or triennialInternational

Contemporary art biennial in the mountain town of Nakanojo (Gunma) since 2007, with residencies for artists chosen through an international open call who then show in hot spring districts, wooden schoolhouses and hamlets. Against the big-budget triennials, it is a municipal-scale, low-cost model run by the town and volunteers. Useful for seeing how a small festival roots itself in local culture (onsen, silk farming, festivals).
