Landsbygdsriksdagen (Swedish Rural Parliament)

Sweden

Rural life and depopulationDemocratic innovationNetwork meetingNational

Sweden's rural parliament, convened since 1989 by Hela Sverige ska leva ("all of Sweden shall live"), a rural organisation with no party or religious affiliation, funded by membership fees, sponsorship and public grants. Every two years it moves to a new region and gathers local groups, municipalities and elected officials for three days to debate the future of the countryside. Skellefteå hosted it in 2026; Uppsala will in 2028. Part of the audience comes in municipal delegations: Piteå, for example, pays for its local associations to attend.
