Kulturelle Landpartie (Wendland)

Germany

Art and territoryRural life and depopulationArt festival or triennialRegional

Self-organised art and culture festival that every year, between Ascension and Pentecost, opens barns, stables and farmyards in dozens of Wendland villages to artists, craftspeople, concerts and debates. Born in 1990 out of the resistance against the Gorleben nuclear facilities, it runs by assembly without public subsidies. A rare case of rural culture sustained by its residents; the tension is that success has made it a major tourist draw, and only Wendland residents who declare themselves anti-nuclear can be members.
