Furusato Kaiki Fair (national relocation fair)

Tokyo, Japan

Rural life and depopulationFairNational

Japan's largest city-to-country relocation fair: more than 700 municipalities and organisations staff counters for people considering a move, with talks by earlier movers and a market of local produce. Free, at the Tokyo International Forum, it reached its 21st edition in 2026. For civic design it is the best gauge of how depopulated territories compete for new residents and of the public incentives on offer. Tension: a place-marketing logic rather than community building.
