National Area Management Network Symposium

Japan

Participatory urbanism and placemakingUrban commons and municipalismNetwork meetingNational

Annual general meeting and symposium of Japan's network of area management organisations (management of urban districts by consortia of owners, firms and residents), with neighbourhood tours, sessions on the legal framework and a service marketplace. The city changes each year; in 2026 it was Nagoya under the theme 'Erimane 3.0'. It is the best window onto Japan's model of managing public space with private actors. Tension: dominance of large developers and business districts over residential neighbourhoods.
